AFC Urgent Care Norwalk is now able to perform COVID-19 rapid testing using the Becton Dickinson Antigen Test. Test results are available same-day from our center. Rapid testing is available by Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the FDA. Rapid testing at AFC Urgent Care norwalk is performed after a telemedicine screening, by appointment only. Patients who have recently been exposed to COVID-19 should not be tested immediately. By waiting 3-7 days to undergo rapid testing, patients will be able to ensure a more accurate result, rather than receiving a false negative.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Because COVID-19 was only detected at the end of last year, much is still unknown about the virus. Symptoms have widely varied from case to case, with some exhibiting no symptoms to requiring hospitalization and ventilation. If you begin to exhibit some or all of the following symptoms, you should schedule a telemedicine visit with AFC Urgent Care Norwalk:

  • Sudden loss of taste and smell
  • Dry cough
  • High fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest and nasal congestion
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Head, muscle and full body aches

More severe symptoms, including difficulty breathing or chest tightness, should be brought to the local emergency room immediately for examination.

What do I need to do for my COVID-19 rapid test?

During your telemedicine screening, your physician will set up an appointment for you to come to our center for the rapid test. When you arrive, you will be required to wear a mask or face covering over your nose and mouth. Please only lower your mask when asked by a physician or staff member for the swab portion of your test. The swab takes only a few short moments. While you will not feel any pain, you may feel slight discomfort.

How the test detects the active COVID-19 virus

The sample is brought to a machine that is specially designed to perform the rapid test. The sample is combined with a chemical mixture that breaks apart the active virus and exposes the genetic material. The genetic material is then replicated in targeted molecules from your sample, which detects the presence of the active virus. The results of the test are displayed on screen, printed and brought to a member of our staff who will contact you with your results that day.
